ENGLISH NEO-GOTHIC OAK BOOKCASE, CHARLES BARRY AND A.W.N. PUGIN
ENGLISH NEO-GOTHIC OAK BOOKCASE, CHARLES BARRY AND A.W.N. PUGIN The upper section fitted with three shelves, the lower section fitted with one shelf. Provenance: Sold Christie's, London, November 29, 2001, Lot 188. Note: Probably supplied for the Palace of Westminster, but in 1866 recorded atClavemont House, Esher. Conceived in the William IV romantic English manner introduced as the "New Palace of Westminster" style, with the collaboration in the mid1830's of the architects Charles Barry and A.W.N. Pugin. Westminster Palace's fortportcullis badge is displayed in cusped tablets within embattled parapets, which are flowered with the English cinquefoil rose. This bookcase appears to be a precursor for the more florid bookcases designed for the New Palace by Pugin, in the mid 1840's. They may have possibly been intended for the King's Tower, now the Victoria Tower.
