Important Trapezoidal Form Mirror by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte
Important trapezoidal form, plate glass mirror by Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte. The mirror consists of a one inch thick, concave glass backing, supporting a floating mirror plate, mounted on a cream coloured, lacquered wood brace. Italy: circa 1950. This piece is highly indicative in its quality and design of the craftsmanship and simple elegance for which Ingrand was famous. Bearing original maker’s sticker, which reads: “Fontanit Luigi Fontana Italy Milano.” Fig. 432 of Franco Deboni’s reference book Fontana Arte shows a conceptual drawing for this mirror, and fig 451 shows the mirror on display at the Fontana Arte boutique in Milan, circa 1957. “Light is the manifestation of life, artificial light is the continuity of life, because it maintains contact with the world and glorifies reality and transfigures it.” -Max Ingrand. Max Ingrand was born in France in 1908. He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratfis in Paris and later apprenticed with the legendary master of Art Nouveau glass Jacques Gruber. Afterwards he began his own art glass studio with his wife Paule, which quickly brought them international renown. He was selected by Gio Ponti to head Fontana Arte in 1954 following the death of Pietro Chiesa, where he presided over a period of growth and innovation, creating many iconic Fontana Arte designs, some of which are still in production today. During this period he also continued to work with his own studio in Paris and was the president of the Société des Artistes Décorateurs. He died suddenly of influenza in 1969, at which point the directorship of Fontana Arte went briefly to Gio Ponti. Provenance: Private collection Robin Dery Montreal Canada

Important Abundantly Decorated Gilt Bronze Mounted Louis XV Style Commode
Rare and important Louis XV style commode after an 18th century model designed by Antoine Robert Gaudreau ebeniste of king Louis XV. The original commode was made for the King's private chambers in the palace of Versaille in 1739 and is now on display at the Wallace Collection in London, England. This fine example was done in the 1860s with intricate marquetry abundantly decorated with finely cast and chased gilt bronze mounts showing both neoclassical , and Rococo attributes. The design of this "commode d'apparat " is a great example of the transition from the Louis XIV to the Louis XV style. It is fitted with its original three inches thick shaped and moulded Breche De Medicis marble top and features a set of four drawers flanking the central cartouche.

Belgium: circa 1976 Jean Claude Dresse (1946-) is a Belgian artist and designer. He graduated from the art academy in Charleroi. His background of being a visual artist is clearly visible in his furniture designs as he uses artistic techniques such as mosaic and etchings. His oeuvre embodies designs made of precious metals such as brass and copper. Together with his father Marcel, he was a prominent figure in the furniture business in the 1980s and belonged to the artistic Walloon School that focused on glamorous aesthetics. After he and his father were successful as designers Jean Claude embarked on a career as a visual artist.
